Quick Overview

inkAID Clear Semi-Gloss Precoat can be applied to any surface or substrate that can go through your printer. inkAID Clear Semi-Gloss provides a slightly translucent, satin finish which allows the underlying colors or image on the substrate to appear through the coating. One coat provides sufficient coverage and most surfaces. More porous substrates such as paper or textiles may need an additional coat. Printers having tracking or guiding wheels can leave marks on non-porous substrates such as plastic, metal, or glass to which inkAID Clear Semi-Gloss has been applied. Porous substrates such as paper with inkAID Clear Semi-Gloss coating are not of concern.

Directions: Applying inkAID Clear Semi-Gloss Precoat

  1. Check MSDS for Clear SemiGloss Precoat for safety instructions in handling this product. Wear protective gloves.
  2. Stir inkAID Clear Semi-Gloss before applying.
  3. Foam brushes are the preferred applicator, as they provide a smoother coating than bristle brushes. Brush onto the surface in even strokes, applying a moderate amount of coating. On smooth, non-porous surfaces apply enough coating so that the coating begins to flow and level by itself. A second light coating can be applied if necessary after allowing the surface to dry overnight. On papers and other porous materials, a second coating, applied perpendicularly to the first, is often used. inkAID coatings may be diluted with 5 – 10% water if needed.
  4. When the coating has dried to the touch the sheet is ready for printing.
  5. Some modification to your color settings or profile may be necessary for optimal color, especially if you are working on a non-white surface where the inks will be blending with the surface color. Use “semigloss or enhanced matte” paper settings as a starting point.
  6. Allow the print to dry for a day or two before any top coating is applied. After top coating, you can coat it with other, compatible coatings (such as acrylic medium) for further protection or work over the print with natural media.

Using it on unique papers Review by alba

I came back from India with about 100 sheets of wonderful handmade papers. I've been able to print my images and they look beautiful. Still softer than regular commercially coated rag papers, but beautifully defined and artistic looking. Love this and am looking forward to continuing experiments in art making. (Posted on 12/15/13)

The best product I've found for giving the right balance of matte and gloss to rag paper surface. I've been using it for almost 10 years, coating everything from mulberry to heavyweight rag and I've never been disappointed. (Posted on 12/13/13)

I find that the Clear Semi-Gloss precoat is great as a base coat on Thai Unryu paper that I will then print on using my Epson 3880. It seems to give more depth to the final print. (Posted on 12/10/13)
Use of Clear Semi-Gloss with hand made paper Review by Wigwam

I have been successfully using inkaid Clear Semi-Gloss pre-coat to prepare various handmade papers for 3 years. These papers include heavyweight Lotka paper from Nepal as well as tissue thin Japanese rice paper. inkaid extends the tonal range significantly and allows me to achieve rich, velvety blacks. I print mainly in black and white and monochromatic sepia tones and use an Epson STYLUS PRO 4880 printer. I have coated both papers up to 17" x 22" . On occasion, I've also printed even larger papers using an Epson 7200. In the beginning, I called customer support for advice in application and found them to be extremely helpful, friendly and supportive. This is a fabulous product that I recommend highly. You will be buying it by the half gallon. (Posted on 12/9/13)
