Quick Overview

inkAID Iridescent Precoats are available in Gold, Silver, Pearl, Red, Blue, Bronze and the new Ultra Lilac and Green colors. Containing true iridescent pigments, these coatings contain an adhesive additive which provides enhanced adhesion to smooth, non-porous surfaces like metal, glass, and plastics. These coatings can also be used on any substrate such as paper, wood, textile, and canvas. inkAID Iridescents provide a beautiful background to print onto. Printers having tracking or guiding wheels can leave marks on non-porous substrates such as plastic, metal, or glass to which inkAID Iridescents have been applied. Porous substrates such as paper with inkAID Iridescent coatings are not of concern.

Directions: Applying inkAID Iridescent Precoats

  1. Check the MSDS for the selected product (there is a separate MSDS sheet for each color) Pearl — Silver — Gold — Red — Blue — Bronze — Ultra Lilac — Green for safety instructions in handling this product. Wear protective gloves.
  2. Stir inkAID Iridescents gently, but thoroughly, before applying.
  3. Foam brushes are the preferred applicator, as they provide a smoother coating than bristle brushes. Brush onto the surface in even strokes, applying a moderate amount of coating. On smooth, non-porous surfaces apply enough coating so that the coating begins to flow and level by itself. A second light coating can be applied if necessary after allowing the surface to dry overnight. On papers and other porous materials, a second coating, applied perpendicularly to the first, is often used. inkAID coatings may be diluted with 5 – 10% water if needed.
  4. When the coating has dried to the touch the sheet is ready for printing.
  5. Some modification to your color settings or profile may be necessary for optimal color, especially if you are working on a non-white surface where the inks will be blending with the surface color. Use “semigloss or enhanced matte” paper settings as a starting point.
  6. Allow the print to dry for a day or two before any top coating is applied. After top coating, you can coat it with other, compatible coatings (such as acrylic medium) for further protection or work over the print with natural media.

An interesting mix of Iridescents Review by KathyAnne

Bronze Iridescent is one of the darker coatings and depending how it is used it could create a darker print. One of the things I love to do with this coating is to use it with a rough type of canvas. If you add another inkAID coating below it you can plan where you see the iridescent in your print. For example, coat the canvas with inkAID Pearl or Gold Iridescent and when that dries add strokes or shapes of the bronze in different areas of the surface. Print over this mixture of Iridescent coatings and see what the result is.

Choose your image to enhance the inkAID coated surface and you will be able to create some nice texture in your image. (Posted on 1/15/14)
Iridescent Pearl-fabulous on silks! Review by KathyAnne

Although I have used all the inkAID Iridescent coatings, Pearl is one of my favorites. This coating is lovely on silks of all types. It allows you to achieve a quality print with a bit of the pearl showing through.

It is also interesting to use one type inkAID coating as a base and then brush stroke Pearl Iridescent in selected places over the base coating. This is a great look on canvas and other fabrics. Let the base coating dry before adding one on top.

It's a good idea to test a piece before doing a large print to make sure you like the way your image works with each inkAID coating. (Posted on 1/15/14)

Covers well, but hard not to have some streaks on the paper. Prints great. Overall, fun to use and I would recommend it. (Posted on 12/15/13)

Coating and Faux Albumen Prints Review by Gregory

I've always been deeply in love with albumen prints. Those rich browns and warm whites attract me as nothing else. A few years ago at the Geo Eastman House I took a course in albumen printing. I loved the process but failed in egg cracking 101. It was then that I started to look for an alternative to albumen. After much experimentation I went back to my printmaking days. Albumen has a warm tone and gold is used in the process. I used the inkAID Iridescent Gold coating as part of the process. This product has never failed to provide the warm gold tones I need for the faux albumen prints. In a recent show I had most viewers could not believe that the prints weren't albumen. All it took was the Iridescent Gold and the right curves in photoshop to create the feeling of an albumen print. (Posted on 12/14/13)

I have been using these with my students for a number of years. The inkAID Iridescent Gold is great on Kinwashi paper, when the light hits the iridescent gold on the texture of the paper it gives a soft glow that highlights the image. We find it particularly good for black and white images as well as infrared.

The Iridescent Pearl is my second favorite, since it creates a creamier look on papers. (Posted on 12/14/13)
