Great starter kit Review by frankjunky

How can you beat this? I recommend starting with a sample kit to get the feel of the coatings and process. Soon you'll be walking around looking at everything and wondering if you can coat it then print on it!! Sorry Fluffy. (Posted on 12/17/13)
Iridescent Sample Pack- great place to start Review by Julia

I was introduced to the inkAid product line by a friend. He uses it to print on fine art papers, and his wife uses it to print on all kinds of surfaces: fabric, fusing, wood, metal, plastic.... I was impressed with their results, and wanted to try it myself. I figured a good place to start was the sample pack, and since I was most attracted to the Iridescent coatings, that's where I landed. I received my package right on schedule.

This sample pack is an excellent value. I'd only seen finished samples of the gold and silver, and was happy to be able to try all of the colors for minimal investment. The 4oz bottles are convenient and easy to mix, and I'm happy with the number of sheets I can coat with 1 bottle. I don't have a final count because I haven't used up all of any color yet, but I'm very satisfied with the progress so far.

If you get this pack, I suggest this: make a sample "swatch" so you have a handy reference of what each color looks like. I made a card with 2 x 2 inch squares for each color (for single and double coats). This makes it easy to compare colors before choosing which to print on.

A few things I've noticed so far: Some of the colors change dramatically based on the angle you're viewing them at, red and green are two prime examples. At one angle green is green and red is red; shift the paper slightly and green is pink and red is green! Some colors are also very "sparkly", again green very much so. Some colors are a little weak: bronze and gold, for example. Pouring off some of the clear liquid on top (before mixing) helps. I've also tried to fortify those colors a bit by adding pearlescent powders used in stamping and embossing, (ex: Pearl-Ex). So far so good, though I do have to apply a top coat of clear (any finish) inkAid. Otherwise the surface feels a bit tacky and smudges. I haven't found the result I'm looking for here yet, but for the price I don't have any qualms experimenting.

I've also tried layering different colors: usually gold, silver, or pearl layered with a color. They work well when two coats of the color itself would just be too much.

I find black and white prints to be easiest to render the way I like. Color images are certainly do-able, but typically I have to make a test print first and then adjust the image and print again before I'm satisfied.

All in all, a fabulous starter set. I'm glad I got it; having all the options and possibilities has made me eager to play and experiment with new ways to use the coatings. I've recommended it to several students who have expressed an interest in working with inkAid; everyone finds the price very agreeable, and the quality on par with the large bottles.
