Q. What sort of substrates can I print on using inkAID?
A. Using inkAID products, you can print on almost anything that will run through your printer! Some popular substrates include fine art and handmade papers, metals like aluminum and copper, film, wood veneer, plastic, and glass. If it will fit through your printer, you can print on it!
Q. Do you offer free samples?
A. Free samples are not available however we do offer samples sets for purchase. The inkAID Sample Set includes one 4 oz. bottle of inkAID White Matte, inkAID Clear Semi-Gloss, inkAID Clear Gloss, inkAID Clear Gloss Type II, inkAID Clear Matte, inkAID Translucent Gloss and inkAID Iridescent Pearl. There is also an inkAID Iridescent Sample Set which includes one 4 oz. bottle of Iridescent Gold, Iridescent Pearl, Iridescent Silver, Iridescent Red, Iridescent Blue, Iridescent Bronze, Iridescent Green, and Iridescent Ultra Lilac. Generaly, a 4 oz. bottle contains enough coating to prepare three to four sheets, 8.5” x 11”, depending upin the substrate.
Q. What is the shelf life of the inkAID products?
A. Whether opened or unopened, we recommend using products within a year of being purchased.
Q. What is the best way to store the products?
A. All inkAID precoats should be stored in a cool, dry place. Do not allow to freeze. Mix all products gently, but thoroughly from the botton of the container before using. Make sure your tools are clean. Always stir to mix the coatings, never shake the bottles; doing so will incorporate air bubbles that may dry on your substrate and disrupt the smoothness of the final coat.
Q. Do inkAID products have an effect on the archival properties of a print?
A. inkAID ink jet receptive coatings are the exact same coatings which are used on commercial ink jet media from companies like Epson, HP, Canon, etc. that you're already printing on. Ontario Specialty Coatings Corp. (the manufacturer of inkAID products) is a major supplier of ink jet receptive coatings to the digital printing industry. We take these same coatings and make them available to use with papers, canvases, films, and metals which are not already prepared for ink jet printing. inkAID products contain no optical brighteners and are acid free and pH neutral, two factors that can have an effect on archival properties. On any print, as long as you are using an acrchival quality substrate, the most vulnerable material will be the ink. Ink lightfastness has been exhaustivley tested over several decades on most of the major brands of ink jet papers, canvases, and films. The result of this testing has allowed the major ink jet printer manufacturers to provide high quality, pigment based inks which are very lightfast and resist fading for a long period of time. It is important to always use a pigment based ink from a known, reliable supplier. Ink lightfastness can be improved further by using post-print top coatings containing UV inhibitors as well as mounting under glass and keeping work in an controlled atmospheric environment.
Q. What kind of coverage (in square feet) can I expect from the inkAID coatings?
A. You could expect coverage of about 200 - 250 square feet per gallon. Keep in mind, though, that coverage can vary greatly depending on your applicator, technique, and the substrate you’re coating. A sheet of handmade paper with no sizing is far more porous and will absorb much more coating than a sheet of aluminum of the same size.
Q. Do the clear inkAID coatings dry absolutely clear?
A. inkAID Clear Gloss and Clear-Gloss Type II precoats will dry absolutely clear. inkAID Clear Semi-Gloss and inkAID Translucent Gloss dries with a slight transluncency to the coating. inkAID Clear Matte will dry will dry with most most translucency.
Q. Where should I look for the Material Safety Data Sheets?
A. An MSDS for each of our products can be found on the website, linked from the Product page.
